Kettlebell Instructor Selection Checklist

INTERNAL HUMAN ANATOMY:

With top Australian Football clubs such as Fremantle, Collingwood and Geelong, the Australian SAS and Australian Institute of Sports using the kettlebells as part of their training, it is no surprise that kettlebell training has gained some attention in Perth, Western Australia. Because of its popularity with top strength coaches and personal trainers around the world, there are more Perth personal trainers who saw the trend and started offering kettlebell training as part of their services. Unfortunately, not all personal trainers are qualified at kettlebell instructions and in fact, kettlebell training can be very unsafe if instructions are of substandard. For safety and top notch training, please use the following checklist as a guide to help you choose a kettlebell instructor in Perth.

Kettlebell Instructor Selection Checklist

Perth Kettlebell Instructor Selection Checklist

  1. Be Cert IV Qualified Personal Trainer - The Perth kettlebell instructor must have Cert IV qualification as it is the Australian national vocational standard to allow a person to conduct personal training services. Anything less than this may mean that the person has not been adequately trained in areas such as exercise physiology, exercise programming, human anatomy and biomechanics to understand how the body cope and adapts to exercise.
  2. Be Certified by Recognized Kettlebell Certification Bodies - It is a must that the kettlebell instructor has gone through the highest standard of kettlebell training and certification process before he can teach you how to use the kettlebell. The certification you should look out for in the instructor is either Australian Kettlebells (AKI), Dragon Door (RKC), International Kettlebell Fitness Federation (IKFF) and American Kettlebell Club (AKC). Always always verify by asking for proof of certification and do not just believe what the instructor tell you.
  3. Look the Part & Walk the Walk - The kettlebell instructor should be leading by example by being fit and healthy if he takes physical and kettlebell training seriously. Afterall, who would be convinced about the benefits of kettlebell training when taking the instructions from someone who is unfit and out of shape himself.
  4. Expert in Exercise Progression - The instructor should be able to provide training variations for different levels of fitness and skills to ensure proper training progress. For example, a well-trained kettlebell instructor should always properly impart the kettlebell swing exercise first to a new learner before ever progressing to a kettlebell clean.
  5. Instructions Should Focus on Movements Patterns - Kettlebell training has never been meant to contract specific muscle groups in isolation as practised in bodybuilding-type training programs. Instead, a typical kettlebell training program should focus on movement aspects of the training. Be very suspicious when your instructor fails to show you exercises such as swing, clean or snatch and instead get you to do a lot of bicep curls or french curls.
  6. Have a Website - Having at least a basic website is a must. It provides a way to check out the instructor's training credentials and background. Kettlebell training like personal training should be treated like a business not a hobby. If the instructor can't be bother with a basic website, he is unlikely to be serious with the training he provides.
  7. Social Proof of his Experience - If the instructor provides high quality training services and his program works, he should be able to provide heaps of written, video and before after pictures testimonials on his websites.
  8. Liability Insurance - Kettlebell instructors should carry liability insurance because any form of exercises (kettlebell training included) carry an inherent risk of injuries. Be sure to ask for one. If he does not carry one, he might not be even a Cert IV qualified personal trainer because he will not be able to buy a liability insurance without being one.
  9. Be Punctual - In fact, the instructor should be available 10 minutes before scheduled training time to answer any questions pertaining to kettlebell training or any issues that is within his scope of practice if he cares about the training he gives.
  10. Offer FREE Test Drive - If the instructor is confident about his training, he should offer a free trial to prospective client who wish to find out more about the quality of his kettlebell training.
